Wellington Vs. Gloucester City Report (12th November 2007)

 Wellington11Gloucester City
Matt Ansty

A superb late equaliser meant Welly could hold their heads high and end their poor league run with a well battled draw against a strong Gloucester City side, from the start it looked as if Gloucester would have the early advantage with many of the Wellington starting 11 out for various reasons including both goalkeeper Matt Eden and reserve goalkeeper Mike Cheasly, Jonny Daw took the number 1 jersey and was greeted with a hero welcome at the pavillion after a superb performance. From the off Gloucester had the advantage and many early chances were wasted by their number 9 who seemed pacy enough but his finishing let him and his team down, one small error from a Jonny Daw goal kick went to a Gloucester player whos shot from the edge of the box went over the number 1 Daw but thankfully hit the woodwork. Shortly after Scott Walker was deemed to have been fowled in the Gloucester box, upped stepped Josh Pugh who unfortunately missed his second penalty of the season. The first half ended shortly after with the score set at 0-0 with both teams having their fair share of chances.
Gloucester were able to take a relatively early lead, a midfield mishao gave the ball to Gloucester who were able to run down the pitch and get the ball near the edge of the box, a neat shot across the goal went past a helpless Daw in goal to give the away side the lead. Wellington showed their true colours after conceding and came close to scoring on several occasions, an indirect freekick for a goalkeeper mistake was the first chance but the ball was hit at the wall whereas many would have hoped the ball was struck low and hard, moments later a lovely through ball from Scott Walker found substitute Lee Cook who subsequently rounded the keeper but a last ditch challenge prevented the youngster from scoring his first goal for the Club. However Wellingtons resilience paid off an a ball from the right hand side found its way to unmarked Matt Ansty whos powerful shot sailed into the roof of the net to give the Wellington players, fans and the always exuberant IVF something to cheer about!! Shortly after Anstys goal the referee blew the final whistle and the players were greeted with a heroes welcome as they entered the pavillion, in particular Jonny Daw whos performance between the sticks could rival that of Matt Edens!

Wellington Vs. Pershore Town Report (5th November 2007)

Wellington 12Pershore Town
Scott Read

Wellington were left looking for answers as they were beaten by Pershore Town after taking a 1 goal lead and, initially, looking the better side. Wellington looked the more dominant side in the first half and had 2 decent chances coming from 2 well taken Josh Pugh corner kicks, the first set piece made its way over the keeper and swerved goalbound, with a Pershore defender lucky enough to clear the ball out, minutes later a Josh Pugh corner from the right hand side was deflected in the air to Scott Read who nodded home and gave the Wellington a well deserved lead. Pershore tried to seek the equaliser but were unable to do so in the first half thanks to the hard work from the defence.
The second half started well for the visitors and they nearly made it 1-1, but thanks to a Mike Cheasly save, the one on one effort from Pershore Town couldn't be converted. Halfway through the second half the ball came to a Pershore Town player whos lone effort saw him run over half the length of the pitch and his shot sailed past a helpless Mike Cheasly to give Pershore the equaliser. Wellington did attempt a revival and their efforts went cruely unrewarded, a cross from Aaron Morgan from the buyer line found Scott Walker whos powerful shot could only hit the crossbar. Another Aaron Morgan cross into the box hit a Pershore defender and a goalbound looking deflection, instead, took a cruel journey around the post. After this it was Pershore who applied the pressure in the remaining 5 minutes and Mike Cheasly was kept on his toes on a few occasions and pulled off some good saves but with around 4 minutes to go a powerful shot from a Pershore player was almost saved by Mike Cheasly but the ball slipped from his grip and rolled slowly into the back of the net to give Pershore the lead and the inevitable win.

Wellington Vs. Stourport Swifts Report (October 29th 2007)

 Wellington03Stourport Swifts

Wellingtons poor league form continued as Wellington were beat 3-0 by a strong, yet small, Stourport Swifts side. Despite the scoreline it was Wellington who had a promising start, 10 minutes in a corner found its way to Mike Cheasley whos Zola-like flick was, unfortunately, denied by the crossbar and then cleared. Wellington were also denied the lead towards the end of the half, a fast paced run by Scott Walker from the halfway line who followed by a shot from the edge of the box which cruely hit the post, to make matter worse Stourport were able to take the lead before the half time whistle thanks to a combination of defensive errors and some skill from the Stourport goalscorer, the shot crept in past Matt Eden in the goal and gave the visitors the advantage.
The away side started very well in the second half and their efforts were rewarded when an unmarked player got possession on the edge of the box, his powerful shot was fired past a helpless Matt Eden. Wellington did try to pull the game back, Aaron Morgan fought valiantly and his ball from the right wing found Scott Walker who couldn't header in, the rebound came to Mike Cheasley but his goalbound shot was deflected out. Moments later an identical play took place, another sweet ball from Morgan found the head of Pete Wood and seemed goalbound but the Stourport keeper had different ideas and tipped the ball wide. Wellington put everything forward and it seemed likely that the home team would get a late consolation goal but fate was cruel for Wellington and after a failed attack Stourport launched a successful counter attack and netted past Eden to make the scoreline a rather upsetting 3-0.

Wellington Vs. Bromyard Town Report (September 17th 2007)

 Wellington12Bromyard Town
Jonny Daw

Wellington succumbed to an embarrassing defeat against league strugglers Bromyard Town this evening in a 2-1 loss. Bromyard were quick off the mark with an early goal, a low cross in found one of their players unmarked in the box and he was able to finish past goalkeeper Matt Eden. Wellington upped the pressure throughout the remainder of the half but chances were hard to come by, and when they came they couldn't be converted successfully, a good chance came halfway through the first half, a ball found Joe Mohan completely unmarked with acres of space but instead of finding the back of the net he managed to hit the crossbar, although it is fair to say the ball was arriving at a fair rate of knots.
Nick bullock came close to equalising shortly after Joe Mohan's chance, a rebounded shot found its way to Nick whos shot was, unfortunately, tipped over the goal by the Bromyard 'keeper. The rest of the half was quite quiet with both teams failing to latch onto any balls and make much of an impact, the half ended with the score 1-0 to Bromyard Town.
The second half began with the visiting side dominating play, they struck a good goal to give them a 2 goal advantage and continued to up the pressure which was held off by the Wellington defence, Wellington had a couple of chances, the first coming from a cute flick by Nick Bullock which found Jonny Daw who had made an excellent run into the box, his shot, however, was hit at the goalkeeper. Wellingtons determination paid off an their hard work was rewarded with a great goal, a nicely played through ball by Nick Bullock found Jonny Daw, when the 'keeper came out Jonny neatly chipped the ball over to make the score 2-1. Wellington were eager to equalise, and in their desperation substitute Kieran Powell was sent off for a reckless 2 footed challenge, despite Wellington throwing everything forward it wasn't to be and they suffered at the hands of Tinpot Bromyard Town.

Wellington Vs. Bromsgrove Rovers Report (Sept 3rd 2007)

  Mike Cheasly

Wellington entered the game with only 2 substitutes and a number of first team players missing including Josh James, Ben Fischer and Jonny Daw all out with various injuries. The home team started the game off well and managed to sneak in an early goal, Wellington were quick to apply the pressure and shortly after Wellington nearly equalised following an Aaron Morgan cross that found Mike Cheasly, whose volley, unfortunately, was directed right at the keeper. However Wellington kept up their momentum and the hard work was rewarded thanks to a Scott Walker through ball which found Mike Cheasly who made a short run and neatly slotted the ball past the oppositions 'keeper. After the equaliser the away team appeared to sit back and it was Bromsgrove that were able to attack, they capitalised on a defensive mistake and were able to take the game to their terms, the score now 2-1. The rest of the half was rather lacklustre and both teams appeared to want to wait for the whistle to blow, that it did and the teams returned to the dressing rooms with the home team having the upper hand.
The first half started the way the second half ended with nothing been created by either side, the home team resorting to the "hoof ball" tactic at times, ten minutes into the second half a pass by Aaron Morgan on the edge of the box found Mike Cheasly whose rocket of a shot was somehow tipped over the bar by Bromsgrove Rovers Number 1. After this chance Bromsgrove upped the tempo and could have maybe snuck in a couple more goals had it not been for the defensive partnership of Tim Jones and Scott Read. Bromsgrove were the better team until the last ten minutes of the second half when the Wellington team found their second wind and caused lots of trouble for the Bromsgrove defence, the final effort of the game came from a powerful free kick from Josh Pugh which unfortunately sailed over the bar.

Wellington Vs. Bishops Cleeve Report (August 27th 2007)

 Wellington42Bishops Cleeve

Scott Walker 2,

Aaron Morgan,

Pete Wood

Wellington recorded their first win of the season against last seasons runners up Bishops Cleeve in an impressive game, the first half was a relatively dull affair with few chances from both teams, midway through the second half a tactical change was made and the home teams style of play improved and the pressure was upped towards the end of the second half but to no avail, the only real chance coming from a powerful effort by Aaron Morgan which was hit wide.
The second half saw the home team dominate and they had many chances to score, the first a run by Jonny Daw down the left wing which saw his left footed shot fire wide, seconds later Pete Wood intercepted the ball from the Bishops Cleeve defence and appeared to be clear on goal but a defender reached him in time and denied him the chance of his first goal for the club. Just past the hour mark the home side broke the deadlock and a cross from the right hand side by Aaron Morgan found Scott Walker waiting at the back post and he volleyed the ball into the back of the net as the away teams 'keeper looked on. Bishops Cleeve were back on level terms shortly after, a clearance from Scott Read at the back made its way to the unmarked number 4 for Bishops Cleeve who struck a powerful volley which couldn't be reached by Matt Eden. Wellington pushed on and their hard work was rewarded, Aaron Morgan obtained the ball from a throw-in near the edge of the box, he cut inside and got past the away teams defence to unleash a powerful shot which hit the top left corner giving the home team the advantage once more.
Substitute Ben Fischer provided the assist for the next goal, he gently lofted the ball forwards to Pete Wood who made a darting run to the ball, he took the chance and was able to score his first goal in an orange shirt. Another substitute was also involved in the creation of Wellingtons 4th goal of the game, Nick Bullock played a neat ball into Pete Wood who then lost possession but Scott Walker was in on the action and won a challenge for the ball and was able to neatly slot the ball home to seal the win for Wellington and gain some revenge against the team who beat them at home 6-2 in the previous season. Moments before the final whistle the away side were fortunate enough to score a consolation goal thanks to a lucky deflection.

Wellington Vs. Bewdley Town Report (August 20th 2007)

Scott Walker 2,

 Josh Pugh (penalty)

Wellingtons first game of the season came against a difficult set of opponents who in the end beat them thanks to a combination of poor refereeing decisions and mistakes from the defence, after a promising start by the lads the home team took the lead in the first half but Wellington were quick to equalise thanks to a ball in by Josh Pugh that found Scott Walker, with his nimble footwork he was able to casually place the ball into the bottom corner from 6 yards out, however Bewdley scored 2 more and the team appeared to be demoralised, the referee blew the half time whistle and the team returned to the changing rooms with the score set at 3-1.
After what must have been a motivating team talk the players came out into the second half as a better squad, minutes into the second half a free kick from Ben Fischer found Christian Palmer who made an excellent run into the oppositions box only to be pushed, the referee saw no advantage was gained and signalled to the spot, Josh Pugh took a long run up and hammered home the resulting penalty. With the score at 3-2 the away team upped the pressure and continued to attack at Bewdley, with around ten minutes to go a run Josh Pugh found himself in the left corner of the pitch with the ball at his feet, with some twisting and turning he found his way past the Bewdley defender and his cross went through the Bewdley defence and found Scott Walker waiting in the 6 yard box, Scott was composed as ever and neatly placed the ball into the back of the net in a similar fashion to that of his first goal. However a run down the right wing by Bewdley resulted in a cross that was successfully cleared by the Wellington defence, however the ball bounced to Bewdleys number 10 who finished the ball with a thunderbolt of a volley that left both Matt Eden and the Wellington defence powerless, Wellington applied pressure in the remaining ten minutes or so but with the referee against them it proved fruitless and the final score was Bewdley Town 4 - 3 Wellington FC.
